Should You Choose Machine Or
Free Weights For The Most Weight Loss?

So what is best - machine weights or free weights?

This factor is not so important for you if your aim is to lose weight, rather than gain muscle. But its still a decision that you have to make, and so this article is included here.

What you need to understand though is that the more important thing is that you actually work out regularly. If you've been on this site for any period of time, you'll know we keep talking about this. Consistency is the most important thing.

If you've got that, then you are most of the way there. All you have to do is just pick they type of exercise that suits you most.

That goes fo this choice too. You can use machine weights if its easier for you, or use free weights if that's your preference. Just make sure you work out regularly.

How do you decide?

Well, here are the advantages of using machine weights versus free weights:

  • Easy to learn to use
  • They're very safe, and there's less chance of getting injured than with free weights because of the inbuilt safety mechanisms
  • They really target the working muscle only
  • You don't need a training partner to use the exercises, so machines are preferable if you don't have a training buddy

The disadvantages are:

  • Limited number of exercises on machines, so it can lead to boredom unless you use free weights
  • Free weights also creates stress on more of the supporting muscles, so you get a more natural workout

Again it doesn't really matter too much for our purposes, just make sure you follow all the other advice on here about weight training to enjoy the full benefits of anaerobic exercise. Remember consistency is the key. Never miss a workout (unless of course you're injured), follow your balanced, nutritious eating plan, and you'll see results. Its that simple.
