The Best Type Of Aerobic
Exercise For Weight Loss

The great thing about aerobic or cardio exercises is that there is such a variety of them. It is natural though to want to know which is the best one for weight loss.

It's not really that important, what is important is that you are doing some thing regularly. Being consistent is more important than they type of exercise. If you are exercising regularly, you will see results.

If you want to be pedantic though, here is a tip (again this is not as important as making sure you are consistent):

It is wise to change up the exercise you choose every 4 to 6 weeks. This is because your body adapts and becomes more efficient at burning fat by using the same muscle groups over and over again. This means that it is able to use less of the fat to conduct the same energy. So you burn fewer calories even though you might be exercising the same (because your body starts adapting to a fitter you).

By changing exercises you are continually forcing the body to re-adapt and this ensures you continue to burn a high(er) amount of calories.

Again, I have in all honesty probably dramatized the effect of this. It is far more important that you are exercising at all. Please remember this. Consistency is the most important thing.

So now that you know that you need to exercise, what can you choose from?

Here is a list of exercises that you can pick from:

  • Running/jogging
  • Cycling Stair
  • Climbing
  • Rowing
  • Cross country skiing
  • Elliptical exercise
  • Power walking
  • Stationary bike
  • Swimming
  • Aerobic classes

For a beginner, moderate paced walking is fine. You can increase your intensity as you improve.

When doing large amounts of cardio, some people get bored doing the same exercise over and over again. So another reason you might want to change your exercise around from time to time is to keep your mind fresh. This really depends on the person though. Some people just love doing one type of aerobic exercise.

I know some people that just love running outdoors. They wouldn't dream of changing it because they're in a routine, they love the feeling of being outside and just relaxing as they run. Remember, there are many benefits to aerobic exercise - and if you find that you naturally prefer one type of exercise over another then stick to it.

If you do that, you'll give yourself the best chance of exercising regularly - and as I've pointed out over and over again here - that is the most important thing.

So what's the best type of aerobic exercise? Its the one you enjoy the most.

Of course, if you are serious about losing weight, you need a holistic exercise program that includes both aerobic and anaerobic exercises. You may also want to check out our deep breathing exercises to keep you healthy and vibrant as you step up your exercise.

So what sort of program do I recommend?

As far as exercise programs go for long lasting weight loss, I recommend two programs.

Tom Venuto's "Burn The Fat" ebook is the first recommendation because apart from containing a great section on exercise (he's a natural bodybuilder and personal trainer), he also has the best overall book on weight loss - from the many I've reviewed.

If you're only interested in the exercise section, then I believe Craig Ballantyne's "Turbulence Training" is best for you. His nutrition package may not be as comprehensive as Tom's book, but his exercise section is just killer. It is the best one I've seen that's targeted for weight loss. He even covers bodyweight exercises in his course (which is using your own bodyweight to simulate weight training without the weights).
