Why Does Your Body Put On Fat?

Fat has received a lot of bad press over the last few decades. It's basically seen as the enemy to a lot of people. Its time we take a real good look to see why your body would do something so seemingly evil to you.

Let me ask you a question that's off topic for a minute ( it's not really, as you'll soon see).

If you had $1,000 dollars to invest, and you had a choice of 3 totally safe options. The first option guarantees you get $1,400 in a year, the second one also guarantees $1,400 and the last option is going to guarantee you $1,900, which one would you pick?

I'm sure you'd all pick the $1,900 (assuming everything else is the same), right? So what does this have to do with fat and fat storage?

In a word - everything!

Let me explain.

There are three major nutrients, called macronutrients that all food can be broken down into - carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Your body will get a different amount of calories based on what macronutrient it digests:

  • 1 gram of protein gives = 4 Calories
  • 1 gram of carbohydrate = 4 Calories
  • 1 gram of fat = 9 Calories

As you can see, fat gives your body over double the calories of proteins and carbohydrates.

So when your body has to decide which of the macronutrients to store (for a time of lack), it's going to pick the one that's going to give it the highest return.

Why would you store something that will only give you 4 calories, if for the same space you're going to get 9 calories? You wouldn't, and neither would your body. Remember your body is designed for maximum efficiency, and fat gives it the most potent source of energy so it's totally understandable why your body would choose fat storage.

On top of this, fat provides you with insulation from the cold.

So when you put on fat, your body is not your enemy. It is not working against you; it in fact is being a really good 'investor'. It's saving for a rainy day, when you might not have access to the food you have now. It's another example of your body's survival instincts kicking in to ensure you have a longer life.

This of course was very useful for our forefathers, the hunter/gathers who wouldn't eat for day between their killings, but is not useful at all today when we have access to food whenever we want it. The only problem is your body doesn't know that, it can't read your mind or intentions; it can only deal with what it experiences.

So what can you do, if you find yourself storing more calories than you want, and don't know the best way to get rid off it?
